Third Islamic Summit convenes in Mecca

From 25 to 28 January 1981 the Third Islamic Summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (the "Palestine and Al-Quds Session") met in Mecca and Taif. One of its resolutions created the International Islamic Fiqh Academy.

    First issue of Umm al-Qura newspaper published in Mecca

    On 12 December 1924 the first issue of Umm al-Qura appeared in Mecca. Founded by King Abdulaziz, it had Yusuf Yassin as its first editor-in-chief and ran the headline "The Makkah Declaration". It is still published from Mecca as Saudi Arabia's official gazette.

    Historic Jeddah, the Gate to Makkah, joins UNESCO's World Heritage List

    On 21 June 2014, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting in Doha, inscribed "Historic Jeddah, the Gate to Makkah" on the World Heritage List. The port city was the gateway for Muslim pilgrims arriving by sea on their way to Mecca.

    Muslim World League founded in Mecca

    On 18 May 1962 (14 Dhu al-Hijjah 1381 AH), a resolution of the General Islamic Conference, held in Mecca during the Hajj, established the Muslim World League. The League is headquartered in Mecca.
