On 21 June 2014, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, meeting in Doha, inscribed "Historic Jeddah, the Gate to Makkah" on the World Heritage List. The port city was the gateway for Muslim pilgrims arriving by sea on their way to Mecca.

On 18 May 1962 (14 Dhu al-Hijjah 1381 AH), a resolution of the General Islamic Conference, held in Mecca during the Hajj, established the Muslim World League. The League is headquartered in Mecca.

On 1 October 1949, the Day of Arafah during the Hajj season, Jeddah Radio, the country's first radio station, began regular broadcasts. Prince Faisal gave the opening address on behalf of King Abdulaziz; a Mecca studio opened on 2 October 1951.

The Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques Architecture in Mecca opened on 1 February 2000, under King Fahd. Its seven halls display items such as an 1825 teak staircase of the Kaaba, a gold-covered wooden rain gutter, tools once used at the Zamzam Well and one of the main doors of the Prophet's Mosque.
