King Salman inaugurates five Masjid al-Haram expansion projects

On the night of 25 Ramadan 1436 (July 2015), King Salman inaugurated five main projects of the Masjid al-Haram expansion launched under King Abdullah: the main expansion building, the courtyards, pedestrian tunnels, the central services station and the First Ring Road.

    The remaining work on the first Saudi expansion of Masjid al-Haram, begun under King Saud in 1375 AH (1955), was completed under King Khalid on 7 Rajab 1396 (1976). Carried out in four stages, the expansion had also brought the Safa–Marwa gallery inside the mosque.

    King Fahd lays foundation stone for Masjid al-Haram expansion

    On 2 Safar 1409 (September 1988), King Fahd laid the foundation stone for the second Saudi expansion of Masjid al-Haram. Completed in 1993, it was described as the largest expansion of the mosque in 14 centuries up to that time.

    Plan to expand Quba Mosque tenfold announced

    On 8 April 2022, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the King Salman Project to expand Quba Mosque in Medina, regarded as Islam's first mosque. The plan aims to enlarge it about tenfold to 50,000 square metres, with capacity for 66,000 worshippers.
